If you haven't yet checked out Letter from Home by the Pat Metheny Group, go do it! I admit that it has somewhat of a smooth jazz feel to it, but the caliber of writing and musicianship on the album is much higher than what you would get from most smooth jazz albums. If you play guitar, then you need to hear it for Pat's virtuosic and lyrical playing (try transcribing any of his solos on the disc, or better yet try coming up with one of your own). The writing is brilliant, the sounds are a layer of lush and varied textures that tantalize the ears. If you are looking for a way to get into jazz, this is a decent album to bring you in. The album's about 16 years old, so you should be able to find a used copy somewhere.
